The Foundation

The DC Bar Foundation (DCBF), a 501(c)(3) organization established in 1977, funds, supports, and improves legal representation for the poor, vulnerable, and otherwise disadvantaged in DC, and we are committed to the vision that residents of the District have equal access to justice, regardless of income. We provide grants, training, and technical assistance to DC legal aid organizations and award loans to DC poverty lawyers to help with their educational debt.

The Foundation is located in the WeWork community on M Street in SE Washington D.C., right next to the Navy Yard/Ballpark Metro Station (green line).

The Position

DCBF seeks a Director of Development (DOD) to join its leadership team as the lead strategist and project manager of DCBF’s roughly $900,000 philanthropic revenue portfolio. Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Development is both a strategic and tactical position. The DOD will be responsible for developing, executing, and analyzing DCBF’s annual development plan, as well as representing DCBF to individual and institutional donors. The DOD will also be responsible for analyzing and fine-tuning DCBF’s communications, ensuring the foundation is optimizing its messaging at every opportunity.

The primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participate in overall management of the organization as a leadership team member
  • Serve as the liaison to the Development Committee, Advisory Committee, Young Lawyers Network Leadership Council (“YLN LC”), YLN LC Selection Committee, and Call to Action Volunteer Solicitors
  • Update existing development plan with new ideas, industry best practices, and data-driven analysis
  • Create and maintain a development budget that establishes projected revenue and expenses
  • Ensure a robust gift pipeline big enough to hit growing annual revenue goals by actively managing prospective and current donors solicited via numerous events, two major campaigns, and various general appeals
  • Design, execute, and monitor all events, campaigns, and appeals
  • Design moves management plans for all institutional and individual donors
  • Serve as lead relationship-manager to a portfolio of institutional and individual donors
  • Lead all relationship management with foundation funders and complete timely and excellent grant writing and reporting
  • Oversee consistent and creative donor stewardship
  • Manage development operations and revenue tracking
  • Supervise and mentor the Development and Communications Assistant
  • Oversee quality assurance on gift processing
  • Oversee accurate and thorough documentation of all development activities
  • Ensure integrity and accuracy in all records and reports in Salesforce, DCBF’s CRM
  • Develop creative and mission-centric fundraising messaging that articulates the special role and impact of DCBF in the local legal and civil legal aid landscape

Minimum Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and 8-10 years of nonprofit development experience
  • Demonstrable experience as a fundraising generalist, with hands-on practice at major gifts, annual giving, corporate partnership building, institutional giving/grant writing, special events, and online giving campaigns
  • Experience managing and improving development operations, ranging from CRM management to budget monitoring to gift processing
  • Experience managing staff, working with volunteers of all levels, and liaising with contractors and consultants
  • Experience working in a CRM, preferably Salesforce

  • Ability to lead as a dynamic, professional, and poised ambassador for DCBF
  • Reliable and friendly communicator who reaches out and follows up
  • Demonstrates strong self-motivation and strategic thinking
  • Creative thinking and willing to test out new ideas
