COVID-19 Response Grant Highlight: Children’s Law Center

Our COVID-19 response grants are helping DC’s legal aid organizations navigate hardships incurred from COVID-19 so they can provide life-saving legal support to our DC neighbors in need. This month, we feature Children’s Law Center. Read on to learn about the work they are doing to support their clients through this crisis, and how our funding helps.

Children’s Law Center helps children and families in DC who face unthinkable problems: who to live with when their parents can no longer care for them, how to obtain special education services in school, or what to do when a landlord refuses to fix heat and water issues, just to name a few. Reaching more than 5,000 children and families each year, Children’s Law Center works to ensure that more District children are on the path to a better education, good health, and stable, loving families.

Children’s Law Center is using our funds to support their efforts to mitigate the urgent and immediate family law and public benefits concerns for children that have been most severely impacted by the pandemic. These needs include issues such as emergency custody hearings, custodial powers of attorney (legal documents which give another person authority to care for a minor when hardship or other factors prevent the child’s legal guardian from caring for them), and new Supplemental Security Income benefits for children with disabilities.
