Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Today we each have an extraordinary opportunity to show up for our local community.

May 17-18, the Do More 24 campaign hosted by United Way of the National Capital Area spotlights more than 700 DMV nonprofits. It invites you and me to join forces for the causes we care about, right here at home.

May 17-18, your Do More 24 gift to the DC Bar Foundation makes a powerful statement: You believe in equal access to justice for the District’s most vulnerable citizens. You are making it possible.

And your gift creates life-changing outcomes for DC residents who desperately need civil legal aid. Here’s how:

$24 – Provides a training scholarship for a legal aid attorney, keeping skills current for those serving residents in need.

$48 – Pays an interpreter to translate a custody agreement for a single mother whose first language is not English.

$124 – Provides a legal aid attorney to help a home-bound elderly person draft a will.

$240 – Provides a legal aid attorney to help a struggling family fight an eviction.

$480 – Helps a legal aid attorney pay their student loan balance of more than $160,000, making it possible to continue this work on the front lines.

Will you join me in showing up for our neighbors in greatest need? We can ensure that those facing unemployment, paralyzing debt, homelessness, domestic violence, and child abuse don’t go without legal representation simply because they cannot afford it.

Sincerely, Kirra L. Jarratt, Executive Director
