Letter from the Executive Director

In a city with the highest per capita rate of homelessness in the country, we know all too well how essential it is that we protect reliable, affordable housing in our community.

But here in the District, the options for low-income homes have plummeted over the last decade, setting DC as the least affordable housing jurisdiction in the country and leaving low-income residents with nowhere to turn and without a home. For those who are able to secure a place to live, available options leave many families stuck in a cycle of poverty, as most of the income they have goes to rent. More than half of DC households pay over 30% of their income on rent, the point at which they are considered rent-burdened.

In the face of this housing crisis, now more than ever, it is important that we join together to support the families in our community. Your support of the DC Bar Foundation makes possible the work necessary to protect affordable housing options, keep families in their homes, and build a stronger, safer DC. You can read this month about the investments DCBF has made for DC’s affordable housing, and while we have come a long way, there is still much work to be done. However, we cannot do it without your help. Thank you for being a part of the civil legal aid network that works each day to keep everyone in our community in a home.

Sincerely, Kirra L. Jarratt, Executive Director
