Arnold & Porter’s “Go Casual” Success Story, featuring Melissa Weberman

Applause for the team at Arnold & Porter, who raised more than $6,000 for access to justice in DC — just by going casual at the office!

Arnold & Porter’s Melissa Weberman, member of the DC Bar Foundation’s Young Lawyers Network Leadership Council, spoke to us about the phenomenal success (and fun) her firm had with this year’s Go Casual for Justice fundraiser.

To promote Go Casual in their workplace, Melissa’s team asked Arnold & Porter partners to send email blasts to everyone in the DC office, explaining the role of Go Casual, along with – here’s the kicker – a photo of the partner “going casual.” Partners’ heads were superimposed over “casual” bodies – photos of themselves transformed in lederhosen, biker gear, and one mildly risqué shot with a bodybuilder.

Interest generated, laughs had.

On the day of their Go Casual event, A&P’s “Casual Celebration for Justice” encouraged everyone in the office to go casual. They served treats and raffled off prizes gladly donated by businesses near the office, along with framed copies of the “casual” photos the partners had sent.

It was a hit. The partners’ good-natured leadership was so successful because staff members anxiously awaited each new, hilarious email leading up to the event. It got attention, while educating about the work of DCBF grantees and, ultimately, funding access to justice for our neighbors most in need.

Considering Go(ing) Casual at your workplace? Melissa recommends thinking about the personality of your firm and coming up with ways to connect with both lawyers and non-lawyers on issues of poverty law, DCBF grantees, and the critical resources DCBF and Go Casual for Justice provide.

Now is the time to commit to host your own event to support Go Casual. Find out more about Go Casual and contact us to plan yours!
